The province says it’s more than doubling the forestry revenues to be shared with First Nations this year as part of its work to develop a new forestry revenue-sharing model. The interim enhancement retroactive to April 1st will increase revenue sharing rates from three, four or five per cent — to eight, nine or 10 per cent. Forests Minister Katrine Conroy says that will lead to an immediate increase to 63-million dollars for First Nationsthis year — up from 58.8-million dollars in fiscal 2021-22 under the existing program. Chief Nicole Rempel of Vancouver Island’s K’omoks (KO’-mox) First Nation welcomes the increase but says she expects a future agreement that provides a 50-50 revenue split between the province and First Nations.
