A fierce wind storm is whipping across most of the B-C coast and although forecasters say it should end within hours, it has already cut power to thousands on Vancouver Island and the south coast.
B-C Hydro reports more than 20-thousand customers are in the dark across Vancouver Island and almost 23-thousand are without electricity on the Mainland, with more outages possible before the storm blows through early this afternoon.
Wind warnings are posted for Prince Rupert south to Tsawwassen and for most of Vancouver Island, with gusts in northern areas up to 110-kilometres per hour, and 90-kilometres per hour in the south — and those wind warnings had been extended to the Cariboo and 100 Mile regions by mid-morning.
Gusts of 102-kilometres per hour were registered at the Comox Airport this morning.
The storm arrived just as unusually high tides were set to peak, prompting the city of Courtenay to set up a portable flood barrier or “AquaDam” in Lewis Park.
