I was chatting with a friend the other day about Christmas movies and our favourites which we watch each year. For myself, I’ve always been a fan of the classics. There’s just something about old films that really excites me. Even though new films have enormous budgets, special effects, crystal clear surround sound and visual effects that can blow your mind, it’s still the story and the emotion of the actors that bring the characters to life that really counts for me. My favourite Christmas movie ever is the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol starring Alastair Sim. In every scene, he truly brings out Ebenezer’s character as he transitions from a hard nosed, unfeeling, dismissive businessman to someone who begins to realize his past transgressions to someone who is ultimately set free from his earthly chains that his former partner warned him about through his ghostly visit. A true masterpiece in my opinion and a definite must see.
My list of favs wouldn’t be complete though without the likes of A Christmas Story, which is one of my wife’s favourites. It’s A Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart and A Miracle on 34th Street would also be in my top 5 must see movies each year. And of course, Christmas wouldn’t be complete with a viewing of Home Alone. I still get such a laugh from the scene where the Tarantula crawls on Marv’s (Daniel Stern’s) face and he screams in pure terror. Too funny. Enjoy your Christmas movies and have a very happy holiday season.
